With the movie adaptation of the ABBA-inspired musical “Mamma Mia” having raked in $610 million at the box-office globally, popular 70’s & 80’s soft rock bands everywhere have been trying to organise their own equivalents in the hopes of emulating the Swedish band’s success story.
Now, 20th Century Fox has scored the film rights to an untitled project about the music of the Beach Boys reports Variety.
Though not a biopic and not based on a musical like “Mamma Mia”, the film will be akin to ‘Mia’ in that it will be a fictional story that uses the music of the band weaved into the narrative.
The No.-1-selling American band of all time, the group has been responsible for such songs I Get Around, Surfin’ U.S.A., Good Vibrations and Cocomo. Susannah Grant (“Erin Brockovich,” “Burlesque”) is penning the script.
Actor John Stamos, who played drums with the band, will produce the feature along with “Hairspray” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.
