Forest Whitaker Is Epix’s “Godfather of Harlem”

Forest Whitaker is set to star in and executive produce the early 1960s set series “Godfather of Harlem” for Epix and ABC Signature Studios.

Created by Chris Brancato (“Narcos”) and Paul Eckstein and picked up for ten episodes with a straight-to-series order, Whitaker will play crime boss Bumpy Johnson who returned after a decade in prison to find the neighborhood he once ruled in shambles.

With the streets controlled by the Italian mob, Bumpy takes on the Genovese crime family to regain control. During the brutal battle, he forms an alliance with Malcolm X.

The series is described as a collision of the criminal underworld and the civil rights movement during a tumultuous time – touching upon themes of gang violence, police brutality, opioid addiction and racial politics.

Brancato serves as showrunner while Nia Yang Bongiovi, Eckstein, James Acheson and Markuann Smith will executive produce.
