Early indications are that J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” could wind up passing “Avatar” as the top worldwide grosser of all time according to leading box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
Speaking with Variety, the Rentrak senior analyst says that with the film’s incredible current box office trajectory and the overwhelmingly positive response: “if any film has a chance to break into the $2 billion club and have the potential to become the highest grossing film of all-time globally, this is that film.”
‘The Force Awakens’ has grossed $610.8 million worldwide as of Monday. Following on from its record-breaking $248 million domestic and $529 million global weekend launch, the film also set a Monday domestic record with $40.1 million – beating previous holder “Spider-Man 2” with $27.2 million.
Word of mouth continues to shine with the film scoring a mere 1% negative reactions on Twitter.
