Despite numerous server crashes and other problems that caused some people to miss out, it seems plenty of others managed to nab tickets yesterday for Disney and Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.
Fandango reports they had a record-setting first day and sold eight times as many tickets as it did on the first day of sales for previous record holder – the first “The Hunger Games” movie.
MovieTickets.com says sales were three times higher than at any point in the company’s 15-year history, and four times higher than pre-sales for “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” in the same period. AMC says ‘Force’ beat the previous record holder by more than ten fold and they have already sold out more than 1,000 shows nationwide.
Presales broke every IMAX record as well, generating more than $6.5 million in domestic ticket sales across 390 IMAX screens in North America. IMAX has never previously registered more than $1 million in pre-sales on a single day.
