J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” begins rolling out in U.S. cinemas on Thursday night and all the years of hype now turn towards two things – the merits of the film itself, and its box-office.
Advance ticket sales for the film have crossed the unheard-of $100 million mark in North America, with $50-60 million of that for the film’s opening weekend. In comparison, the previous record holder was “The Dark Knight Rises” with $25 million.
In recent days, cinema owners have been adding screenings to accommodate demand with tracking services indicating a $180 million-$220 million opening weekend is in order. We’ll know the results in a few days, more immediate will be the reviews with a bunch set to break in a few hours.
