Continuing on from the Harrison Ford interview and “Star Wars” EW magazine covers yesterday, Disney and Lucasfilm have released a whole bunch of new photos from J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” over at Entertainment Weekly.
The pics also come with some more information about the way in which the new film is set up in terms of the relationship between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire at the beginning of the film – 35 years after we last saw them:
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD
It seems that even though the Death Star blew up and both The Emperor and Darth Vader were killed, the Empire is not only still going – it has essentially re-written history to tell its version of events.
The First Order stormtroopers were raised under the auspices of the former Empire. They have been fed propaganda about the heroes of the Rebellion and paint Luke Skywalker as the “villain who destroyed the benevolent Empire”. That would explain the character’s absence, he’s been forced into hiding.
Also, Abrams has revealed that Carrie Fisher’s Leia Organa in the film is not referred to as Princess. Abrams adds: “She’s referred to as General, But… there’s a moment in the movie where a character sort of slips and calls her ‘Princess.'”
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opens December 18th.
