Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s “21 Jump Street” films have been notable for being able to pivot between sending up its material and being flattering to it at the same time. They’re action comedies but smarter and more self-aware than others of their ilk.
They’ve also set something of a template that other film adaptations of series from the 1980s and 1990s seem to want to follow. In May we get the “Baywatch” film which has had two trailers so far, the first was rather disastrous and the second decent (though a decided improvement).
Now comes the first trailer for “CHiPs,” the Dax Shepherd-directed take on the old NBC series. This owes even more of a debt to ‘Jump Street’ than “Baywatch,” but at least brings the darker and bawdier laughs to the story of motorcycle cop partners in the California Highway Patrol.
Shepherd, Michael Pena, Vincent D’Onofrio, Adam Brody, Rosa Salazar, Vida Guerra, and Kristen Bell star in the film which opens wide on March 24th.
