“The Hangover” director Todd Phillips has been getting darker and meaner in his various works with time, not always to his benefit as his knack for that style of comedy isn’t as strong as his skill with more outrageous slapstick gags.
With his newest film though, he’s going for an outright drama with darkly comedic elements, a film about two twenty-something friends (Miles Teller and Jonah Hill) who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. military contracts – raking in big money in the process. Things get out of hand when they win a contract to arm the Afghan army.
Though described as a more fratboy-ish version of “Lord of War,” the trailer is simply begging for viewers to make comparisons to Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” but lacks the obvious sheen and quality that comes with that film. Still, it has appeal and it’s set to open in cinemas on August 19th.
