Last year saw three boxing movies playing for audiences. Two of them – “Bleed For This” with Miles Teller and “Hands of Stone” with Edgar Ramirez came and went with both scoring little critical acclaim and even less box-office.
Trying to distance itself from those is the third one, which was originally titled “The Bleeder”. Now renamed “Chuck,” it has released its first trailer ahead of its May 5th release.
Philippe Falardeau helms the true story of New Jersey liquor salesman and journeyman boxer Chuck Wepner (Liev Schreiber) who suddenly found himself in sport’s biggest spotlight when he went fifteen rounds in the ring with Muhammad Ali. Wepner served as the real life inspiration for Rocky Balboa.
Elisabeth Moss, Ron Perlman, Naomi Watts, Jim Gaffigan, Michael Rapaport, and Pooch Hall also star in the film which has screened at festivals to decidedly better response than those other two aforementioned films.
