Australian filmmaker John Hillcoat is a man famous for doing westerns set anywhere but the American Old West. From the 19th century Australian Outback in “The Proposition,” to a post-apocalyptic future in “The Road,” to a Prohibition-era bootlegger tale with “Lawless” – his films love classic archetypes of masculinity in all its ugly glory.
His new film “Triple 9” explores a different genre again – this time the cop drama. Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Winslet, Gal Gadot, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Teresa Palmer, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus and Clifton Collins Jr. star in this story of a group of of dirty cops who have to manufacture a 999 ‘officer down’ call in order to pull off an impossible heist. Things go awry when the unsuspecting rookie they set up to die foils the attack.
Hillcoat’s longtime musical collaborators Nick Cave and Warren Ellis sadly aren’t returning, rather Trent Reznor’s collaborator Atticus Ross is going solo on this one. The film itself is now slated for a March 4th 2016 release and today a violent new red-band trailer has gone online. Check it out below:
