The first trailer has been released for the long-awaited “The Lighthouse,” the new black-and-white hallucinatory horror film by celebrated “The Witch” director Robert Eggers.
Shot in a 1.19:1 aspect ratio, Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe star as lighthouse keepers on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s where things quickly take a turn for the creepy. The film debuted at Cannes to rave reviews and is coming to the Toronto Film Festival later this fall.
Eggers reportedly shot the film on black and white 35mm negative, and filming utilised a special lens made to re-create orthochromatic film. In addition, the work of Herman Melville and a book by Sarah Orne Jewett were key to creating the character’s dialects.
“The Lighthouse” opens in New York and Los Angeles on October 18th and will expand in the following weeks.
