Beloved filmmaker Guillermo del Toro tackles one of my favorite genres – Gothic romance horror – with his new film “Crimson Peak”. In a genre with cornerstone works like “Rebecca” and “Jane Eyre” along with less romantically inclined tales like “The Innocents” and “The Others,” this seems a perfect fit.
The story follows an aspiring author who is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…. and remembers.
All the hallmarks are here – repressed desire, past secrets, a giant house with forbidden areas, supernatural shenanigans and loads of atmosphere. Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Charlie Hunnam star in the film which hits cinemas on October 16th.
