Universal and Blumhouse’s “The First Purge,” the fourth film in the horror franchise and a prequel to all of them, pulled in $2.5 million in Tuesday night previews ahead of the July 4th holiday today.
That’s nearly on par with the $2.6 million that the first sequel, “The Purge: Anarchy,” scored in Thursday night previews, but is the lowest of the series to date. Still, costing just a mere $13 million to make, the film is reportedly headed for a five-day launch haul of around $30-35 million.
“The First Purge” is opening early to get in ahead of Disney’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp” which is expected to suck up all the air once it opens Friday. Reviews have been decidedly weak with the current one sitting on a 45% Rotten Tomatoes score.
