Boasting a budget of $100 million, the upcoming Chinese language feature “Asura” is said to be China’s most expensive fully domestic film ever and today the first photos for the big-budget tentpole release have premiered over at THR.
Loosely based on Buddhist mythology, this marks the debut directorial effort of Chinese filmmaker and Hollywood stunt coordinator Peng Zhang. All the key production roles are held by Hollywood veterans, several being Oscar winners, with the rest of the crew made up of Chinese staff.
The story is set in a mythical dimension of pure desire – one which is threatened by a coup from a lower heavenly kingdom. Rising star Lei Wu plays the film’s young hero opposite veterans Tony Leung and Carina Lau. “Asura” is still in production and is being shot in seven locations across China.
