First Photos: Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased”

Focus Features‘ has released the first look photos from actor-turned-filmmaker Joel Edgerton’s “Boy Erased” which is already considered a potential player in next year’s awards race.

Focus Features won an intense bidding war for the rights to this film adaptation of Garrard Conley’s memoir about a young man forced into the often abusive and increasingly illegal practice of ‘conversion therapy’ to ‘cure’ his homosexuality.

Lucas Hedges (“Manchester by the Sea”) plays the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town who is outed to his parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe) as gay at the age of nineteen.

Forced into attending a conversion therapy program, or else be shunned by his family and friends, he comes into conflict with the head therapist (Joel Edgerton). The project marks Edgerton’s second directorial effort after the underseen “The Gift”.

Filmmaker Xavier Dolan, musician Flea, singer Troye Sivan, and “24” actress Cherry Jones all have key supporting roles in the film opening September 28th.
