As part of an upcoming issue, Entertainment Weekly has posted first look photos of Sophie Turner as Dark Phoenix along with Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence in Simon Kinberg’s “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” for 20th Century Fox.
The new film will adapt the seminal Marvel Comics storyline ‘The Dark Phoenix Saga’ in which Jean Grey is taken over by a dark cosmic entity that will tear her apart, with the X-Men trying to stop her from destroying the universe.
The magazine says the story will be set in 1992, nearly ten years after ‘Apocalypse’ as the X-Men have become national heroes. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) starts sending his X-Men on increasingly dangerous missions, until a space-bound rescue sees a solar flare strike the X-Jet, awakening a long-dormant power in Jean Grey.
Chastain’s villain is described as “an otherworldly shapeshifter who comes into contact with Phoenix” which has quickly led to the conclusion she’s playing The Skrull Queen. The photos come almost a year ahead of the film’s theatrical release on November 2nd next year. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Tye Sheridan, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Olivia Munn also return.
The reveal comes as Imax Corp. and Twentieth Century Fox Film have extended their partnership through a new multi-picture agreement for five major movies from Fox’s slate including three X-Men related films – “The New Mutants,” “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” and the “Gambit” film.
