BBC and Amazon have unveiled the first photo from their upcoming adaptation of Shakespeare’s “King Lear” starring Anthony Hopkins in the title role and “Lady Macbeth” breakout Florence Pugh as his youngest child Cordelia.
Set in the fictional present, Hopkins plays the eponymous ruler, presiding over a totalitarian military dictatorship in England. Also starring is Emma Thompson as his oldest daughter Goneril and Emily Watson as his middle daughter Regan.
Supporting roles include Jim Broadbent as the Earl of Gloucester, Andrew Scott as his loyal son Edgar, John Macmillan as his illegitimate son Edmund, Jim Carter as the Earl of Kent, Christopher Eccleston as Oswald, and Tobias Menzies as the Duke of Cornwall, Anthony Calf as the Duke of Albany and Karl Johnson as Lear’s loyal jester the Fool.
Noelette Buckley produces the project which will premiere on BBC Two this spring.
