Based on Dan Brown’s third novel, the story follows Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) in a race to prevent an Illuminati assassin carrying out a terrorist attack on the Vatican during a papal enclave.
Ron Howard, scribe Akiva Goldsman, producer Brian Grazer and star Hanks return in the same capacities as their ‘Da Vinci’ work, though Hanks much talked about hairstyle from ‘Da Vinci’ has gone in favor of a more regular look for him. The cast also includes Ayelet Zurer, Ewan McGregor, Pierfrancesco Favino and August Fredrik.
Speaking with the paper, Howard says the style is “totally different. It’s better. Everything is more contemporary”. Grazer says ‘Da Vinci’ “got all the facts of the book right, but the movie was a little long and stagey”, whereas in ‘Demons’ “Langdon doesn’t stop and give a speech. When he speaks, he’s in motion.” He goes on to call ‘Da Vinci’ “a puzzle movie. It wasn’t a contemporary movie. It was a little static. This one is more dynamic. It’s an action movie.”
The general tone of the story examines religion in the unstable modern world – “our energy is focused on belief. This looks at what would happen when you have an act of terrorism designed to undermine that belief.”
Exteriors were shot in Rome, and elaborate sets were built to replicate the Vatican and other churches at Los Angeles studios after church officials banned actual filming in the holy city.
