The BBC and Netflix have released the first trailer for the eight-episode genocide drama “Black Earth Rising” starring Michaela Coel and John Goodman. Though better known for comedy work such as “Chewing Gum” and “Roseanne” respectively, both get quite serious in the Hugo Blick-created series set across the UK, Europe, Africa and the United States.
Coel plays Kate Ashby, a woman who was rescued as a young child during the Rwandan genocide and adopted by British criminal prosecutor Eve Ashby (Harriet Walter), Now in her late 20s, she works as a legal investigator in the law chambers of Michael Ennis (Goodman).
When Eve takes on a case at the International Criminal Court, prosecuting an African militia leader, the story pulls Michael and Kate into a journey that will up-end their lives forever. Noma Dumezweni, Lucian Msamati and Abena Ayivor co-star.
