Eric Warren Singer (“American Hustle”) is in negotiations to pen the adaptation of the Jason Matthews espionage novel “Red Sparrow” at 20th Century Fox.
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” director David Fincher and actress Rooney Mara are reportedly also interested in reteaming for the film which previously had Darren Aronofsky attached as director.
Set in contemporary Russia, the story follows a female state intelligence officer drafted against her will to become a ‘Sparrow,’ a trained seductress in the service.
She is assigned a first-tour CIA officer who handles the agency’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young officers collide in a charged atmosphere of deception and sexual attraction.
She soon seeks revenge against her soulless masters, whilst helping the CIA to ferret out a high-level traitor in Washington.
Fincher hasn’t decided on his next film yet. Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch will produce.
