Filming Begins On “Mary, Queen of Scots”

Focus Features and Working Title have announced the start of production on their historical drama “Mary, Queen of Scots” starring Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”) as Mary and Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street”) as Queen Elizabeth I.

Also onboard are Jack Lowden (“Dunkirk”) as Lord Darnley and Joe Alwyn (“Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk”) as Robert Dudley.

Crowned Queen of Scotland in the 16th century, Mary was forced to abdicate her throne and soon thereafter was executed at age 18 for her alleged involvement with an assassination attempt on the life of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I.

“The Tudors” and “Vikings” creator Michael Hirst, who penned Shekhar Kapur’s acclaimed 1998 feature “Elizabeth” and its sequel “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (which featured Samantha Morton as Mary), penned the script with Josie Rourke directing. Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Liza Chasin are producing.
