The ninth film in the “Fast and Furious” franchise, which doesn’t yet have a title, has begun filming. Actors Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Nathalie Emmanuel all revealed the start of filming on their social media accounts yesterday, posting text and video from the set after the first day wrapped.
Diesel and Rodriguez appeared together in the video, a welcome reunion as Rodriguez at one point indicated she wasn’t going to come back unless there was more inclusion for the female members of the franchise. A female writer was subsequently brought on board.
Of their first day, Diesel says:
“We just completed our first day. It feels like a miracle. One hard earned. We’re just so grateful. We’re grateful to you, Universal. We’re grateful to our whole team. Incredible crew and incredible cast, and most importantly, we’re so grateful to you, world, that has adopted this franchise. Can you believe it? It’s so awesome. We’re so blessed and we love you so much.”
Emmanuel, who joined the series in the seventh entry as Ramsey, also confirmed on Twitter that the first day of shooting was done. The tweet had six emojis indicating team members – herself, Dom (Diesel), Letty (Rodriguez), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Mia (Jordana Brewster) and Tej (Ludacris).
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is not returning for the new film, neither is actor Jason Statham, but John Cena is joining the team this time out. Justin Lin, who helmed the third through sixth films, is back in the director’s chair.
“Fast and Furious 9” opens in cinemas on May 22nd 2020.
