The upcoming fifth main installment in the “Gears of War” gaming franchise, “Gears 5,” is giving up smoking.
Xbox Game Studios and The Coalition have decided to remove all smoking references from the game following not-for-profit anti-smoking organization Truth Initiative approaching Turner, who holds the broadcast rights to the game for esports, about making the change.
Turner then collaborated with The Coalition to strip out smoking from the game and made an edict not to include it in any further ‘Gears’ titles. A rep for Xbox Games Studio, however, says the decision was done solely by The Coalition.
Turner and Truth are partnered for this weekend’s ELeague Gears Summer Series Invitational where people will get a first look at the new game in action ahead of its September 10th release.
Past “Gears of War” titles have included occasional scenes with tobacco use and the removal of tobacco depictions has reportedly been months in the works. “Gears 5” will still have plenty of glorification of violence though with an M rating for blood and gore, strong language and intense violence.
