William Fichtner has scored a leading role in the currently filming “Independence Day” sequel reports Deadline.
The publication also suggests this is just the start of something bigger though. According to them not only has he signed on to play a top general in the film, but his character will score an even larger role in two potential sequels to follow.
This is surprising news as previously there had been talk of shooting two back-to-back follow-up films to the 1996 sci-fi blockbuster, early plans which were shelved in favour of just one sequel for now.
If accurate, it sounds like Fox is hedging their bets for the potential start of a new franchise which would put Fichtner in prime position. It would be the actor’s second one at the moment as he had a major role in last year’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot and has returned for the currently filming sequel.
Roland Emmerich is helming the “Independence Day” sequel which opens next year.
