Following the critical and commercial success of “Don’t Breathe,” Sony Pictures has lined up Fede Alvarez as their favorite choice to direct “The Girl in the Spider’s Web”. A follow-up to David Fincher’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” the story is based on David Lagercrantz’s fourth novel in the late Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy.
In the new story Lizbeth Salander teams up with journalist Mikael Blomkvist to enter a world of a ruthless underworld of spies, cybercriminals, and government operatives – some willing to kill to protect their secrets.
Steven Knight penned the script with Scott Rudin, Amy Pascal, Elizabeth Cantillon, Eli Bush, Ole Søndberg and Søren Stærmose on board to produce. The film is now being fast-tracked to be made next year on a much tighter budget than the whopping $90 million Fincher spent on his adaptation.
It’s unclear if Mara will return to the role at present or if this will be something of a minor reboot but should it prove successful, it’s expected Sony will then adapt the second and third books which are interconnected.
