Too Many Superhero Films On The Way?

By Garth Franklin Thursday August 7th 2014 12:04PM

2014 has seen four superhero films battle it out over a several month period - "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and "Guardians of the Galaxy".

In comparison, next year is fairly light with just three entries - the juggernaut that is "Avengers: Age of Ultron," the unpredictable "Fantastic Four" reboot, and the unknown quantity "Ant-Man". With the recent schedule announcements by Marvel and DC though, a genre that some feel is already overextended is about to get a whole lot more crowded.

Indeed, between 2016 and 2020 there is expected to be no less than around thirty films hogging the multiplexes. 2016 sees the jump to six, 2017 hits a peak of nine, 2018 drops back to seven, and 2019 is currently at three (though more are expected).

The full list as it currently stands:

At least another 2-3 Marvel studios films are expected to be announced for 2019 & 2020, at least another one or two Spider-Man spin-offs and X-Men spinoffs are also likely to be added to the list.

This leads to the inevitable concern of burnout - which of these movies will soar high and which will stumble out of the gate? What would be a reasonable number of superhero films to have per year that wouldn't seem like overdoing it? Have your say in the comments below.
