“Fast and Furious”, the fourth film in the fast girls and B-movie cop thriller franchise broke records in its opening this weekend.
Pulling in $72 million, the amount exceeded all expectations and easily topped the $50 million first weekend of “2 Fast 2 Furious”, the previous biggest opener for a film in the franchise.
Even with a wide 3,600 screen opening, the film also pulled in a stellar $20,950 per screen average, matching reports of many sold out sessions.
The opening was twelve times that of the other wide release this week, ensemble comedy “Adventureland” which opened in sixth place with a disappointing $6 million.
No other major changes. Both “The Haunting in Connecticut” and “12 Rounds” fell around 57% in their second week while “Monsters vs. Aliens” dropped a moderate 43.5%.
In limited release “Gigantic” and “Paris 36” both opened to so-so $10,500 per screen averages, “Sugar” took in a mediocre $6,473. Sci-fi comedy “Alien Trespass” opened on 40 screens and scored a woeful $1,073 per screen average.
