“Drive Angry 3D” writer Todd Farmer and director Patrick Lussier have been selected as the men to revive the “Hellraiser” franchise reports Variety.
The original 1987 feature, which director Clive Barker based on his own book “The Hellbound Heart”, told the story of an unfaithful wife who attempts to assist her dead lover in his escape from hell.
More famously it introduced the demonic Cenobites and their leader Pinhead who became an enduring horror character. The creatures, made up of gory flesh-stretched make-up and rubber, appear in the story when summoned using an antique puzzle box.
The reboot is expected to be an origins story about the Cenobites, and it’s undecided if original star Doug Bradley would return to play Pinhead.
French helmer Pascal Laugier (“Martyrs”) was linked to the project two years ago and earlier this week came talk that Christian E. Christiansen (“The Roommate”) had been enlisted to helm a more ‘teen friendly’ rebooted version of the gory series. Farmer & Lussier will almost certainly keep things R-rated.
Filming plans to get under way next year for a late 2011 or early 2012 release.
