CBS is set to revamp its summer sci-fi drama series “Extant” for its second season. Casting changes are in order, though Halle Berry is still onboard to play ISEA astronaut Molly.
The first season saw her returning from a year in space and mysteriously pregnant, the second will deal with her efforts to track down her alien son who is threatening the human race.
Actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Michael O’Neill are out of the show, while Goran Visnjic’s husband and Camryn Manheim’s co-worker characters are being reduced to recurring status and will return only for the first few episodes of the season.
Staying on as full series regulars are Pierce Gagnon as her android son and Grace Gummer as a Humanichs Project assistant. New series regulars will be added as well, the changeover due to the different storyline.
The renewal of “Extant” came as a surprise. Launching to much fanfare this past summer, reviews for the show have not been kind. Audiences have been solid, especially in DVR with 8.64 million viewers and a 1.7 rating average, but those aren’t the big hit numbers the network was likely hoping for.
