A fourth film in “The Expendables” franchise is a certainty now as Nu Image / Millennium have done equity and Chinese distribution rights deals with SP International Pictures on behalf of SSXH Beijing and Max Screen Film Distribution.
The result is that a fourth film in the “Expendables” series will be shot, partially on location in China, next year for release in 2017. Neither a director or cast have yet been announced, but the film will be produced on a budget of over $100 million.
Despite the investment and location shooting, it is not expected that there will be enough Chinese elements for it to be considered as full co-production. The deal also covers the action thriller “Securty” starring Antonio Banderas and Ben Kingsley. That $15 million film recently began production in Bulgaria.
Though “The Expendables 3” flopped hard in North America with just a $39 million gross, the film did much better in China with a $78 million haul.
