Ethan Hawke To Pen “Good Lord Bird”

Blumhouse Television has set Ethan Hawke to co-write and star in the limited series “The Good Lord Bird” based on James McBride’s 2013 National Book Award-winning novel,

The story follows Henry Shackleford, a young slave living in the Kansas Territory in 1857, when the region is a battleground between anti- and pro-slavery forces.

When legendary abolitionist John Brown (Hawke) arrives in the area, an argument between Brown and Henry’s master turns violent. Henry is forced to leave – with Brown, who believes he’s a girl. Over the ensuing months, Henry conceals his true identity as he struggles to stay alive.

Mark Richard is co-writing the script with Hawke who will executive produce. Jason Blum is producing.
