Ethan Hawke To Lead Showtimes Good Lord Bird

Showtime has handed out an order for the eight-part limited series “Good Lord Bird” from Blumhouse Television with Ethan Hawke set to star as 19th-century abolitionist John Brown.

Based on James McBride’s award-winning novel, the story unfolds from the viewpoint of Onion – an enslaved teenager who becomes a member in Brown’s motley family during the time of Bleeding Kansas.

Eventually they participated in the famous 1859 raid on the Army depot at Harpers Ferry which failed to initiate the slave revolt he intended but was the instigating event that started the Civil War.

Hawke is slated to co-write and executive produce the project alongside Mark Richard (“Hell on Wheels”) and Anthony Hemingway (“American Crime Story”). Hemingway will direct while Jason Blum, Brian Taylor, Ryan Hawke, David Schiff, Jeremy Gold and Marci Wiseman will also executive produce.
