Both “The Equalizer” and “Mamma Mia” sequels are set to open in three weeks and both are reportedly tracking to score opening weekends of either just over or under $30 million each according to early figures.
Those are solid numbers. The Denzel Washington-led “The Equalizer” opened in 2014 to $34 million, while the Meryl Streep-led musical “Mamma Mia” opened a decade ago to $28 million, so both should be on par with their first entries if not potentially improve on them.
“The Equalizer” ultimately nabbed $192 million worldwide, while “Mamma Mia” was a powerhouse which scored over $600 million worldwide, with ‘Equalizer’ expected to top its predecessor while ‘Mamma’ is unlikely to achieve that same stunning level of success.
Both “The Equalizer 2” and “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” open July 20th, a week behind “Skyscraper” on July 13th and ahead of “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” on July 27th.
