Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed “Dunkirk” and Sony’s widely panned “The Emoji Movie” are vying it out for the top spot at the weekend box-office with both films heading for an opening around $27 million each.
On Friday alone, ‘Emoji’ easily won with $10 million to $7.9 million for “Dunkirk,” but it remains to be seen if the reviews will have an impact – especially as the film scored a B CinemaScore from audiences (which is VERY low for an animated film). Whoever wins, “Dunkirk” is expected to pass the $100 million mark domestically tomorrow.
The Charlize Theron-led “Atomic Blonde” is looking to come in fourth with $18.3 million. Critical reviews (63/100 on MC) are mixed, and the B CinemaScore doesn’t bode well for its chances. Even so, it’s one of the best debuts for a Focus Features film and its $30 million budget means it’ll likely end up in profit.
“Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” is crashing and burning, the Luc Besson sci-fi epic is set to plummet 63% in its second weekend. Faring far better is “Girls Night” which is falling only 36% in its second week and will take third place with $20 million.
“Detroit,” “Brigsby Bear” and “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power” are all reportedly doing superb business in a handful of cinemas.
