Emma Watson has scored a starring role in James Ponsoldt’s film adaptation of Dave Eggers’ contemporary thriller novel “The Circle” opposite Tom Hanks. .
Ponsoldt (“The Spectacular Now”) adapted the script for the story of a young woman (Watson) who is hired for a big job in an Internet company called the Circle. Said company links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system.
The result is one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. Things aren’t rosy though as the story explores the perils of the digital age where personal data is collected, sifted and monetized and privacy is rendered obsolete.
Ponsoldt, Hanks, Anthony Bregman and Gary Goetzman will produce and filming begins this September in California.
