Emma Stone is keeping busy it seems as the “Easy A” and “Crazy Stupid Love” star has joined two new projects.
First up, Stone has closed a deal to play tennis pro Billie Jean King in Fox Searchlight’s “Battle of the Sexes” opposite Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs. Stone has been linked for some time but scheduling difficulties put that in doubt, now that has been sorted out.
The film deals with the infamous 1973 tennis match between 29-year-old King beat 55-year-old retired former Wimbledon champion Riggs after he essentially bragged that women could never compete at the level of men in tennis.
Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (“Little Miss Sunshine”) will direct from a script by Simon Beaufoy, while Danny Boyle and Christian Colson are producing. This is not to be confused with two other projects in the works about the match, one with Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti at HBO, and the other a film with Will Ferrell.
Stone has also signed on for “Love May Fail,” a film adaptation of “Silver Linings Playbook” author Matthew Quick’s novel which Sam Raimi was previously linked as director. Mike White penned the script adaptation which focuses on a recently divorced woman who returns to her hometown to clear the name of her English teacher.
The story boasts several wacky characters including a sassy nun, an ex-heroin addict, a metal-head little boy, and the woman’s hoarder mother. No word on a schedule or new director as yet.
