Elba, Ridley Team For Civil Rights Drama

Idris Elba and “12 Years a Slave” director John Ridley are teaming for a six-episode political activism drama series entitled “Guerrilla” which is in the works at Showtime and Sky Atlantic.

The story centers on a politically active couple whose relationship and values are tested when they liberate a political prisoner and form a radical underground cell in 1970s London.

Their ultimate target becomes the Black Power Desk, a true-life, secretive counter-intelligence unit within Special Branch dedicated to crushing all forms of black activism. Production kicks off in London later this summer.

Ridley will write the majority of the episodes and direct the first two. Elba will have a co-starring role in the series and will executive produce alongside Ridley, Patrick Spence, Katie Swinden, Tracy Underwood and Michael McDonald.

Ridley remains attached to a top-secret Marvel drama described only as a reinvention of an existing superhero character. He’s also awaiting the fate of his ABC anthology series “American Crime”.
