Idris Elba, Caleb McLaughlin (“Stranger Things”) and Jharrel Jerome (“Moonlight”) have all signed up for the indie drama “Concrete Cowboys” at Tucker Tooley Entertainment, Lee Daniels Entertainment and Green Door Pictures.
Inspired by Greg Neri‘s novel “Ghetto Cowboy” and the real-life Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club, McLaughlin will play a teen who is taken to live with his estranged father (Elba) in North Philadelphia.
He soon discovers the city’s vibrant urban cowboy subculture, which flourishes despite the surrounding poverty, violence, and encroachment of gentrification. Lorraine Toussaint and Byron Bowers will co-star.
Ricky Staub is directing from a script he co-wrote with Dan Walser. Tooley, Daniels, Walser and Elba will produce with Jeff Waxman and Jennifer Madeloff. Filming is now underway.
