More confirmation than actual news, the New York Daily News paper has announced that Disney and Lucasfilm’s deal with actor Alden Ehrenreich to play the new Han Solo includes “at least” a three-picture deal.
The paper’s source says that the spin-off, which is targeting a May 2018 release, has the potential to go some fascinating directions. It doesn’t indicate if that multi-picture deal is only for Han Solo-specific films or if – ala Marvel – it allows for Ehrenreich to crossover into other “Star Wars” films.
“There is a real sense of excitement around the Han Solo movie and its potential. Given that Han’s early adventures do not need to be tied to the Empire, it leaves story lines open with the opportunity to really give fans something different. They can explore new galaxies and crazy creatures and bring in a wide array of new characters.”
Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan are penning the script at how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel we know. Phil Lord and Chris Miller helm the film which begins shooting in January.
