While we won’t be getting an extended director’s cut of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” when it hits Blu-ray and DVD, we are getting the chance to see some of the deleted scenes that director J.J. Abrams left on the cutting room floor.
This week, editors Mary Jo Markey & Maryann Brando have spoken with THR briefly this week about two characters who got more screen time than what they ended up with in the final cut – Chewbacca and Captain Phasma.
The latter, played by Gwendoline Christie, didn’t get much to do and was last seen being marched towards the garbage chute. Turns out that scene ran longer and we saw her getting chucked: “There was actually a fun thing with Captain Phasma ordering all of the ships into the air, but they didn’t realize that Han and Finn had just thrown her down a garbage chute.”
Chewbacca also had more screen time in the early cuts of the film, including one scene where he interacts with Simon Pegg’s junkboss character Unkar Plutt: “There is a scene in the cantina, or our version of it, the Maz castle, where Rey, once she separates from Finn and wanders off, and Unkar Plutt is there, because he’s been tracking her because she stole the Falcon from him. And they have a confrontation and Chewie comes in and rips his arm off. It became a problem because emotionally it just didn’t track with the story. But it was a really funny scene.”
The pair of scenes join ones already spoiled such as when Maz hands Leia her brother’s original blue lightsaber – a scene glimpsed only in the trailers. The disc is expected to be released around April.
