Ed Zwick Helms Netflix Mars Series Away

Film director Ed Zwick (“The Last Samurai,” “Glory,” “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back”) has signed on to executive produce and direct the first episode of “Away,” Netflix’s upcoming drama series about the first human mission to Mars.

The story follows Emma Green, an American astronaut who must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous, year-long mission to the red planet. It is a series “about hope, humanity and how ultimately, we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things”.

The project hails from playwright Andrew Hinderaker, “Friday Night Lights” producer Jason Katims and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” director Matt Reeves who will all executive produce. Zwick last directed television back in the 1990s – helming several episodes of “Once and Again” and “thirtysomething”.

More recently he executive produced “Nashville” and directed the film “Trial By Fire” starring Jack O’Connell and Laura Dern.
