Dwayne Johnson is in early talks to headline Michael Bay’s long-gestating and relatively low-budget dark comedy “Pain and Gain” at Paramount Pictures reports Variety.
Based on a 1999 Miami New Times article, the story follows a pair of Florida bodybuilders who get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong. The tone is said to be akin to “Fargo”.
Bay has been looking to cast Johnson and Mark Wahlberg, but the latter’s schedule is expected to prevent him from participating in the $20 million project.
Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) penned the script, while Bay and Donald De Line will produce. Shooting is slated to begin in the Spring.
