A DVD Review of...

  Images (C) FOX |
Genre: Thriller
Cast: Ashton Kutchner, Seann William Scott, Kristy Swanson, Marla Sokoff, Hal Sparks
Synopsis: Last night, two party-hearty Dudes had an unbelievably sweet time. Too bad, they can't remember a thing, including where they parked their car. All they know is there's a year's supply of pudding in the fridge, and their girlfriends are ticked at them for trashing their house and forgetting their anniversary. To make up with the girls, the Dudes have to find the anniversary gifts they bought for the occasion. But it won't be easy - the goodies are in their car. So, the Dudes embark on a mission: retrace their steps to find out what they did last night (and who they did it to), hoping it will lead them to the missing car. Little do the Dudes know, they're in for the ride of their lives.
Film Review: Back in the 80's, "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" was perfect for its time - quaint, stupid, adventurous and good fun if you were a teenager. 'Dude' tries to cash in on the same market ten years later - trouble is its rather, well quite frankly stupid. At least 'Bill & Ted' did some cool stuff like travel through time and whilst they themselves were complete idiots the film itself is genius in comparison to this. Kutchner and Scott are well cast, and manage to pull off the characters well enough to make you giggle on occasion (eg. the tattoo sequence). Yet its the lacklustre script which in the end sabotages it and the cheap gags, some go for the obvious but most simply fall flat cause the writing is just plain shocking. Its short and the crowd its aiming at (stoners in their early 20's) will probably like it but everyone else, forget it.

DVD Review: For such a film dud this is a surprisingly solid DVD. The transfer is anamorphic and high quality whilst the audio is fine, but nothing spectacular. The seven extended scenes have some good gags but are just basically the same ones in the film with a few more seconds of visual elements to it (actual new footage probably totals around two minutes). The commentary track you'll either loathe or love, all three act exactly like the guys in the film - its very macho frat party style gags, I'll bet they had fun but for the audience its not as enjoyable. Kutchner is the real surprise as he speaks often and quite clearly, with the best gags of the trio. Also included are a 5-minute making of featurette (Scott is a really good interview subject), the trailer, TV spots and the crappy music video. This is a well stocked DVD considering the film, and well suited to those who loved it. - Garth Franklin
