Driver Praises “Star Wars: Episode VIII” Script

There’s plenty of excitement for Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars Episode VIII” which wrapped production the other month. Those involved have previously indicated that this next entry in the saga doesn’t play it safe like ‘Force Awakens’ did, instead taking some risks and going into some strange territory.

That will play off says actor Adam Driver who reprises his role of Kylo Ren. Speaking with Collider while doing press for Jim Jarmusch’s “Paterson,” Driver talked about what Johnson is trying to do with the film:

“Rian is coming into something that we kind of set up and he just took it to the next level in a really great way. He wrote it, too, and Rian’s writing is so clear. I learned a lot of things about my character through his writing. Some things we talked about before and some things we didn’t. He was working on [the script] while we were still working on the first one. To understand what J.J. was doing and take ownership from there is kind of a remarkable thing.

It’s similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone. For that people always go ‘oooh, it’s dark’ but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear. He trusts [that] his audience is ready for nuance and ambiguity. He’s not dumbing anything down for someone and that’s really fun to play.”

The story of the new one will begin moments after the conclusion of ‘Force Awakens’ and will include many returning characters such as Maz Kanata. Actress Lupita Nyong’o, who played the benevolent lemon-like alien in ‘Force Awakens’ has confirmed to the outlet she hasn’t filmed her scenes yet despite the main photography wrapping.

No word on a title as yet, but the first trailer is likely to come with “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” in December – a year out from the film’s release on December 15th 2017.
