Dreamworks Resurrecting Voltron & Lassie?

Appearing at MIPCOM 2013 in Cannes this week, DreamWorks Animation head Jeffrey Katzenberg says that he intends to fully exploit last year’s acquisition of the Classic Media character library by DWA.

“I think that the Classic Media library is for DreamWorks what the Marvel library was for Ike Perlmutter when he bought it for $175 million 15 years ago.

it’s not, ‘What are we going to do with those 6,100 episodes we have’ … although we’ll get value out of those … the real opportunity is to take every one of those franchises and reinvent them. And that’s what we will set out to do.”

Properties in the Classic Media library include Voltron, Gumby, He-Man and She-Ra, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Where’s Waldo, Fat Albert, Dick Tracy, Lassie, Noddy, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Richie Rich, Dudley Do-Right, George of the Jungle, Mr. Magoo and the Rankin Bass Christmas specials. The first produced film related to the deal, “Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” opens next year.
