Robert Downey Jr. is set to star in “The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle,” a new film based on the character from Hugh Lofting’s 1920s series of children’s books which has been set up at Universal Pictures and Roth/Kirschenbaum Films.
The story follows the eccentric Doctor John Dolittle, a former physician who lives with and treats animals, claiming that he can communicate with them.
Stephen Gaghan (“Syriana,” “Gold”) will direct from a script he wrote which itself is based on an earlier draft by Tom Shepherd. Susan Downey, Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum will produce.
The property was previously adapted into the 1967 Rex Harrison musical “Doctor Dolittle” and the Eddie Murphy 1998 comedy and its subsequent sequels.
