“Dope” Director Plans Chicago-Set Series

Having recently departed the upcoming film adaptation of the DC Comics hero “The Flash”, filmmaker Rick Famuyiwa (“Dope”) has instead opted to join Showtime’s Chicago-set drama series project from Fox 21 TV Studios.

The project is described as a coming-of-age story of a young African-American male growing up in a dangerous neighborhood. Famuyiwa will direct the pilot and executive produce the project which is on track for a series order.

Picked up last year, it has since been redeveloped and will be recast. Lena Waithe (“Dear White People”), actor/rapper Common and Aaron Kaplan remain onboard as producers. Elwood Reid will serve as showrunner.

Showtime has not officially committed to a series order, but a ten episode pickup is considered likely at this point.
