The BBC have set a September 19th premiere date for the ninth season of the “Doctor Who” reboot and unveiled the first trailer for the new episodes.
The final shot is interesting – “Game of Thrones” star Maisie Williams guest stars next season as a character The Doctor is already familiar with, and there’s even been rumors she’s a younger version of the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan.
The trailer was unveiled at a Comic Con panel in San Diego for the show today. Peter Capaldi (The Doctor), Jenna Coleman (Clara), Michelle Gomez (Missy) and creator Steven Moffat were on hand to talk about the new batch of episodes and what to expect with Collider.
While many of Capaldi’s stories in the eighth season took place on Earth, most of the new season will be out in space. The Doctor and Clara will be more united and on a “more even keel” this season out.
Filming is underway on the eleventh episode of the season at the moment, but neither Coleman or Capaldi have seen the script for the twelfth as Moffat is keeping it top secret for now.
Events kick off with a ‘big mistake’ made by The Doctor in the two-part season premiere. One mystery that will be resolved this season is why Capaldi’s Doctor has the same face as Caecilius from “The Fires of Pompeii” – something hinted at in Capaldi’s first episode “Deep Breath”.
Talking about his character this season, Capaldi says The Doctor is more accepting of his role and will be more adventurous: “I think this season is more about running towards adventure and challenging himself and being almost reckless. He knows that at some point he’ll be taken to a very dark place. At some point, he’ll have to fight the good fight the way no one else has been able to do it.”
