Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” was easily the top seller at the box-office this weekend, the Sorcerer Supreme pulling in an $85 million opening.
That makes it the tenth highest MCU film opening and the third highest for an ‘origin’ movie behind only “Iron Man” ($98M) and “Guardians of the Galaxy” ($94M). Overseas and the film has brought in a total of $240.4 million so far by the end of its second weekend of release.
‘Strange’ beat out two newcomers – DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls” which pulled in family crowds to the tune of $45.6 million, and Mel Gibson’s WW2 drama “Hacksaw Ridge” which made a respectable $14.7 million. In limited release, Jeff Nichols’ interracial relationship period drama “Loving” pulled in a very nice $42,250 per screen average across four screens.
