Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange” opened in theatres across North America last night where it grossed $9.4 million, a Thursday night preview that puts it ahead of other Marvel titles like “X-Men: Apocalypse” ($8.2 million), “Thor: The Dark World” ($7.1 million) and “Ant-Man” ($6.4 million).
The film had been projected to open in the $65-70 million range, now those estimates are being revised upwards with $70 million looking to be the lower end of expectations. Reviews for the film are solid at 72/100 on Metacritic which is behind ‘Civil War’ (75) and ‘Guardians’ (76) but ahead of ‘Ant-Man’ (64) and both ‘Avengers’ films (69 & 66).
Going into the weekend, the film’s overseas gross comes in at $133 million so far. That is expected to shoot up this weekend as the film not only opens in the United States but in China as well today.
